Sementara para pengusaha warnet rame-rame ngeributin sistem operasi Microsoft Windows dan beberapa aplikasi komersial yang mereka gunakan, saya kok malah nemu artikel tentang sejarah sistem operasi Microsoft Windows.
Seperti diajak bernostalgia saja rasanya, ada beberapa hasil tangkapan layar dari Microsoft Windows 3.1 dan 3.11 yang sempat digunakan dulu waktu masih tinggal di Dumai. Bajakan? gak lah ya! Ms. Windows yang terinstall saat itu masuk pre-installed operating system dari PC baru jaman itu).
Tapi break dulu, meski artikelnya berjudul Windows History (1985-1994), kita juga diberikan tautan ke sebuah situs milik Nick Linebeck yang mengumpulkan banyak screenshot dari Graphical User Interface (GUI) berbagai macam sistem operasi, termasuk Microsoft Windows dari versi klasik pre-version 1.0 demo (1983), versi 1.x, versi 2.x, versi 3.x, versi 4.x (Windows 9x & ME). Keluarga sistem operasi ini yang berbasis Microsoft Windows NT seperti Windows XP, Windows 2003 server pun bisa ditemukan tangkapan layarnya.
Sayangnya, kita masih harus bersabar sedikit untuk mendapatkan ulasan lengkap tentang sejarah sistem operasi ini karena artikel dari Thomas Hormby tersebut dibuat menjadi beberapa bagian. Berikut adalah satu paragraf kutipan dari artikel pertamanya:
The Interface Manager was first previewed to the public in 1983, and was renamed Microsoft Windows. Unlike the most popular multi-tasking environment of the time, Stacker, it was possible to manipulate windows on the display, moving them, resizing them and hiding them. Additionally, it was possible to run DOS applications along with Windows applications. Many elements were still very rudimentary, relying on ASCII graphic rather than bitmapped graphics. The interface was still very different from what we know today. Menu bars were placed on the bottom of the display (like early LISA prototypes), and were sticky, a user had to keep the mouse depressed to keep the menu open.
